Text Neck—How Technology May Be Causing Your Neck Pain

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, text neck, texting If you went back in time and told someone from 20 years ago that a common cause of neck pain would be a condition called text neck, they would likely find it difficult to understand what you were talking about. The fact is that technology has advanced rapidly in the 21st century. While there are many benefits, there are also some cautions as to how we use this technology.

The Effects of Straining the Neck to Look at a Phone

We spend so much time hunched over and straining our necks to look at our phones that neck pain is not the only result. Other symptoms of overuse of mobile devices include:

  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Arm pain
  • Drooping jowls
  • Sagging skin
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Frown lines

It also increases the likelihood of having wrinkles due to the positions we get into while using these devices. In fact, another term that is emerging due to the way smartphone overuse affects appearance is called smartphone face.

What Can Help Your Neck Pain

First of all, think about your posture when using electronic devices. Try to keep the device at eye level so you are not craning your neck or hunching your shoulders. To avoid should and arm pain, get a stand for your device rather than just holding it up higher. Also, try to limit device use to when it is necessary rather than giving in to the average use of technology (which involves checking the phone about 85 times per day).

Also, in order to help your posture, come and see us at Natural Way Chiropractic. Upper cervical chiropractic care can help your uppermost vertebrae to stay in alignment. This is vital for posture and many other functions of the brain and body. While accidents and injuries can cause misalignments, normal wear and tear can as well, especially if someone is constantly craning his or her neck to view tech devices. An evaluation can show if you have a misalignment that needs to be corrected.
