3 Habits that May Contribute to Neck Pain

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck pain is a common ailment. In fact, about 80% of individuals will have some neck pain at some point during life. We’re going to look at three common practices that can lead to neck pain as well as some suggestions for obtaining natural relief.

Neck Pain Causing Habits

  1. Sitting at a desk all day
  2. Binge-watching on a tablet of smartphone
  3. Reading for long periods of time

Most of these are habits that we either can’t or don’t want to break, so what can be done?

Working to Prevent Neck Pain

If you have to work at a desk all day, two things are very important:

  • Sit in the proper position – Your knees should bend at a 90-degree angle, and your feet should touch the floor. Try to resist the urge to cross your legs, and get a foot stool if your feet don’t touch the ground. Try to keep monitors at eye level.
  • Take breaks – Even if your chair and desk are arranged as ergonomically as possible, you still need breaks. Every 20 minutes or so, look away from the screen at something in the distance to give your neck a chance to relax. Every 45 minutes to an hour, get up and stretch or take a short walk.

If you want to binge watch your favorite show, just be sure you are not craning your neck forward to a device being held in your lap. Get a stand for your device and try to keep it at eye level. Leaning your head forward just 3 inches can more than triple the amount of pressure on your spine. That’s a lot when you consider that the head weights 10-12 pounds to begin with.

The same holds true when reading. Try to prop up the book or electronic reading device so you are not leaning forward constantly. Take regular breaks. If you are holding a book up for a long time, leaning your arms on the armrest of a chair can minimize fatigue and save your shoulders.
